Post V: Evil

According to the critic L.C. Knights, "Macbeth defines a particular kind of evil - the evil that results from a lust for power." On the basis of what you have read so far, do you agree? Is excessive ambition the only source of Macbeth "evil"? Support your opinion with specific details from the text.

I agree to an extent. I think that the murders that Macbeth did were only branches off of a deeper sorce. I believe Macbeth was already evil he just repressed that part of him until his wife convinced him to let it out. Afterall, he didn't want to kill Duncan at first... I mean, it was a notion, but his wife is the one who put it into play. So no, the lust of power wasn't the sorce of Macbeth's evil, but it was the fuel that fed the flame.

I don't think Macbeth's evil comes from a desire to be in power. I think it comes from a desire to keep the power that he has. I mean, he never really shows any excessive ambition, he just wants to hold onto the throne.

Yes Macbeth is hungry for the power of being king. Excessive ambition is not the only evil Macbeth posesses he has the desire to be king as stated in Act 2 Scene 4 "Let not light see my black and deep desires." He also has the evil of paranoia as seen in Act 3 Scene 1 "To be thus is nothing, but to be safely thus."

I do not totally agree with L.C. Knights. I do believe he did lust to be in power because he did start thinking about killing the king even before he wrote the note to his wife. Even though she still has a big part in it because she is the one that pushed him into it when he was trying to back out. I do believe that he was evil before also because i don't think you can think about killing a person and put some real thought into it without being evil.

Yes, I do agree with this statement. When we first meet Macbeth he appears to be a sane person who has morals. However, when he hears this prophecy that he one day will be king something changes in him. He now has this burning passion to have and maintain power. He starts killing and plottig against people to gain and maintain his status.

I agree, Macbeth wasn't power hungry until he met the three witches. They gave him those prophecies which made him very excited for the throne, which also made him very power hungry, which lead to other bigger problems.
